IELTS Academic exams (for ages 16+)
The cost for the exam is £190. Session 1 (17th July, 2021); Session 2 (7th August, 2021)
The IELTS test assesses abilities in listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Students of all ages are welcome to join the IELTS preparation class. However, we recommend that only students aged 16+ and who have an upper intermediate level of English take the IELTS examination while they are at ISSFT.
Students listen to four recordings of native English speakers and then write answers to a series of questions.
Assessors will be looking for evidence of an ability to understand the main ideas and detailed factual information, the opinions and attitudes of speakers, the purpose of an utterance and evidence of the student's ability to follow the development of ideas.
The Reading component consists of 40 questions, designed to test a wide range of reading skills. These include reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical argument and recognising writers’ opinions, attitudes and purpose.
Topics are of general interest. For example, students are presented with a situation and asked to write a letter requesting information, or explaining the situation. The letter may be personal, semi-formal or formal in style.
The speaking component assesses the spoken English skills, pronunciation and fluency of students.
We expect all students to engage with course concepts by thinking, reading, writing and participating to the best of their ability.
This will include working as part of a team, but also as an individual.
We always aim to provide constructive feedback on course work and engage students in conversation. A final report is drafted upon completion of the class, which discusses what was covered in class, areas for development, strengths and individual contribution.
