What Are the Benefits of a Two-Week Summer School for Teenagers?
A two-week summer school gives teenagers time to learn, explore new interests and experience residential life in a supportive setting. For families planning the summer, it offers a defined period filled with academic study, activities and opportunities to make friends.
At ISSFT, students aged 13–18 join our residential summer programmes in Oxford or St Andrews. Each day combines a morning academic class with an afternoon elective, followed by supervised social activities. Here are the benefits of spending two weeks with us.
Academic learning with room to explore

Our dual-study structure allows every student to choose an academic subject and an elective. A teenager might study English or Global Leadership in the morning, then develop their skills in Golf, Theatre, Tennis or another afternoon subject.
This variety helps students deepen an existing interest and try something different. Small, engaging classes encourage them to ask questions, contribute ideas and put their learning into practice.
Greater confidence and independence
Living away from home can be an important step for a teenager. Over two weeks, students become familiar with a new routine, take part in group activities and learn to navigate everyday situations with growing confidence.
ISSFT’s residential staff provide supervision and pastoral support throughout the programme, giving students space to develop while knowing help is close at hand.
English immersion and international friendships

ISSFT welcomes students from more than 90 countries. With English used throughout classes and daily activities, teenagers have regular opportunities to communicate with peers from around the world.
Friendships often begin in the classroom and grow over shared meals, evening activities and excursions. Students leave with a wider understanding of other cultures and new connections that can last beyond the summer.
A varied experience in a manageable timeframe
Two weeks give students time to settle in and take part in the full rhythm of summer school life. Academic classes, electives, social events and weekend excursions create a balance of learning and enjoyment. The defined length also helps families fit the experience around other summer plans.
Is a two-week summer school long enough to make a difference?

Every student’s experience is different, but two weeks offer many chances to practice new skills, contribute to a group and grow more comfortable in an unfamiliar setting. At ISSFT, students receive an academic report and certificate at the end of their session, helping them recognise their progress and consider what to pursue next.
A two-week summer programme can be the start of a lasting interest, a new friendship or a stronger sense of what a teenager is capable of achieving.
