Katie’s ‘top tips’ for studying during the lockdown

Hi everyone at ISSFT! I hope you and your loved ones are all safe and well.

I’m Katie, and I have worked at ISSFT for the past few years.  I have taught ISSFT classes in English and Study Skills as part of the academic programme.

During these usual times when things might seem a bit strange, it is important to make sure that we stay as healthy as we can both physically and mentally. One way to do this is to try and keep your mind as active as possible! I know that quite a lot of you will have had exams postponed or cancelled which must be very frustrating, but also means it’s really important to keep on learning and to use this time to improve your skills as much as you can.

Here are my ‘Top Tips’ for studying during the lockdown.

This could be a desk in your bedroom, or maybe a family office space.

This will also make it much easier for you to concentrate on your studying without constant updates. Leave checking your phone for the breaks.

This could be with a teacher or peers through an app or online. It can be very useful to discuss and share your work with others.

If you aren’t sure what to choose, you could ask a parent or teacher to help you think about what you’d like to improve or work on. Don’t worry if you can’t tick them all off at the end of your study time, it is important to acknowledge what you have been able to achieve.

As always, taking regular study breaks is very important. You could use this time to call a friend or play with your pet.

Studying doesn’t always mean sitting at a desk. Improve your listening skills by tuning into a podcast. There are lots of interesting and free podcasts available in many different languages, or you could create an exam quiz with friends to test each other online.

I hope these tips will help you with your studying during this time and wish you the best of luck with all of your academic work!
