Frequently Asked Questions

Which sports and activities are included?

The programme centres on a varied selection of arena-based and field-based sports. Depending on the campus selected, students may also experience activities such as horse riding, rowing, climbing and water-based sports. The exact programme differs between Oxford and St Andrews according to the facilities, surroundings and specialist providers available locally.

Are the activities the same at Oxford and St Andrews?

No. Arena-based and field-based activities form the core of the course at both campuses, but the additional activities vary according to what is available locally. Families should therefore review the programme for their chosen campus, as the activities are not identical.

Can students choose which activities they take part in?

No. Sports Leadership is designed as a varied programme, and students are expected to participate in all activities scheduled at their chosen campus. Trying new activities and responding positively to different challenges are important parts of developing confidence, adaptability and resilience.

Does my child need previous sporting experience?

No previous experience is required. Students receive appropriate instruction and guidance before each activity, including any specialist activities such as horse riding, rowing, climbing or water-based sports.

Does my child need to be highly athletic?

No. The programme welcomes students with different levels of fitness and sporting experience. However, students should be willing to participate fully, remain active and approach unfamiliar activities with a positive attitude.

How does the programme develop leadership skills?

Students practise leadership through team sports, challenges and shared responsibilities. They learn to communicate clearly, motivate others, solve problems, set goals and contribute effectively to a team.

How are activities supervised?

Activities are carefully planned and supervised by ISSFT staff and, where appropriate, specialist instructors. Students receive safety guidance and use appropriate facilities and equipment for each session.

What should students bring?

Students should bring comfortable sports clothing, suitable trainers, swimwear, a waterproof jacket and clothing appropriate for changing UK weather. Any specialist equipment required for scheduled activities will be provided unless families are advised otherwise.
