Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Golf elective suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. The programme welcomes students of all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced golfers. Beginners receive supportive instruction covering grip, stance, alignment, swing fundamentals, putting, chipping, bunker play, etiquette and the rules of golf.

How are students grouped?

Students are grouped according to their experience and ability wherever possible. This enables coaches to provide an appropriate level of instruction while setting suitable challenges for every student.

Do experienced golfers need an official handicap?

An official handicap is not required to join the Golf elective. However, experienced golfers should provide details of their current handicap or playing level before arrival so that the coaching team can plan the most appropriate training and course-play opportunities.

What will students learn?

Coaching covers swing technique, short game, putting, distance control, course management and mental focus. More experienced golfers receive guidance tailored to their individual technique, playing goals and areas for improvement.

How much golf coaching will students receive?

Golf is studied as an afternoon elective and forms a substantial part of the student’s two-week programme. Students receive structured coaching and supervised practice on scheduled elective days, alongside opportunities for course play and competition.

Will students play on a golf course?

Yes. The programme includes supervised course play, allowing students to apply what they have learned in a practical setting. Courses are selected according to the campus, availability, weather conditions and the ability levels of participating students.

What is the difference between Golf at St Andrews and Oxford?

Both campuses provide structured coaching for a range of ability levels, but each offers a different setting.

St Andrews gives students the opportunity to develop their game in the historic Home of Golf, surrounded by Scotland’s internationally recognised golfing heritage.

Oxford combines expert golf coaching at selected local facilities with the experience of living and studying in one of the world’s most famous university cities.

Do students need to bring their own golf clubs?

Students who regularly play golf are encouraged to bring their own clubs where practical. Equipment can also be made available for students who do not have their own clubs, subject to advance arrangement.

Can students combine Golf with an academic subject?

Yes. ISSFT’s dual-study programme allows students to select one morning academic subject and Golf as their afternoon elective. Students also take part in the wider evening activity and excursion programme.

Are Golf places limited?

Yes. Golf is delivered in small groups to support effective coaching, so places are limited at both campuses. Early booking is recommended to secure a place at the preferred location.
